Why drinks tip over during movie night — and what actually holds one steady

A couch is built for sitting, not for holding a drink through a two-hour movie, and the room only gets worse once the lights go down. Here is the actual physics of why a drink goes over during a movie, what people already try instead, and what a base actually has to do to hold through the credits.

A room that was never built to hold a drink

The accessory market for this problem is bigger than it looks, and almost everything in it fails for a version of the same reason: it was engineered for a surface the couch doesn't actually offer.

Clip-on armrest trays and weighted silicone wraps both require that 5.3-to-5.5-inch flat arm, and buyers of both report a version of the same complaint on rounded or stuffed arms: the accessory tilts or slides on the same crown a bare drink would. A base that resists tipping through a jump scare or a stand-up-for-a-refill moment has to clear all three at once, on whatever surface someone actually happens to be sitting on.
